One of the places we visited in Gamla Stan was The German Church. The Swedish Reformation was very much unlike other countries where battles were fought. It was recommended by the King and voted on by Parliament to convert the state religion from Catholic to Protestant. No fighting took place and all Catholic Church’s became Protestant and all clergy converted as well. Services began being performed in native tongues instead of Latin. The German Church came about because there was a lot of German merchants the Stockholm at the time of the Reformation so they built their own church. German is spoken at services here to this day. Interestingly today most Protestant priests in Sweden are women.
