Vikings were adept at small battles and usually only fought when they vastly outnumbered their opponents. Monasteries were a favorite early target because they were typically rich in spoils and the inhabitants were not warriors but men of faith. Later, after assimilating with the locals the Scandinavian people converted to Christianity. Interestingly the Viking lore of grizzled invaders with horns sticking out of their helmets is a myth. There have never been any evidence of such war attire ever discovered in archaeological digs.
