On the road to Frederikshavn we passed some WWII bunkers created by the Nazis. These are preserved as historical tourist locations today. The Nazis occupied Denmark early in the war and because the Danes were cooperative they were left alone for the most part, including the Jews. Later in the war it became obvious that Germany was going to lose the war the Danes began resistance activities. This angered the Nazis of course and they fully occupied the government and proceeded to demand deportation of all Jews. The Danish government officials refused to turn over their Danish Jewish citizens and immediately and rapidly began clandestine evacuation of all Jews to neutral Sweden. Approximately 98% of all Jews were safely evacuated and later on many returned to their native Denmark.
