The main square in Glasgow is George Square named after British King George III who apparently fell out of favor with the local Glaswegians before his statue was erected. The statue in the center is Sir Walter Scott. George Square opened in 1787 and there was going to be a statue of the king in the centre of the square, but after America declared independence from Britain in 1776, and Glasgow's tobacco trade was lost, the plan was quietly dropped.
