The Boston Red Stockings were a successful franchise from early on. The name change came as a means to shorten it, stealing the Sox idea from Chicago White Sox. By 1918 the Red Sox, as they were from then on called, won several World Series with the help of multiple talented athletes like Babe Ruth. The owner back then was a business opportunist and seeing a way to make some quick cash sold off all the talent from the 1918 series champions including Babe Ruth to the Yankees for the exorbitant amount of $100,000. Babe Ruth exclaimed the Boston Red Sox will never win another World Series and so the “curse of the Bambino” was born. Boston didn’t win another World Series until 2004 but has since won three more.
