North East Iceland

Sometimes to find your own space in Iceland you have to get creative and go off the amazing but well-beaten track. Here, the river Jökulsá á Brú cuts through the heart of an old volcano. The perfectly straight columnar basalt here covers 100 m of the rivers course. Either side of this, the columns bend 90 degrees, likely in response to heat flow variations and direction of the cooling surface, possibly due to magma extraction inducing cooling. A drive down a dusty road and a 4 km hike through fields, past waterfalls and many sheep, followed by a scramble down the valley, is well worth the experience. And to think it all started with an article in an inflight magazine (people read those?!)... there is no adventure without uncertainty. . . . . . . #iceland #guidetoiceland #easticeland #basaltcolumns #jokulsa #roamtheplanet #hike #hikers #wanderlust #travel #traveller #travelgram #traveldiary #travelphotography #volcano #nature #naturephotography #instanature #instatravel #instagood...
