The 'world tree' is a key symbol in the art and thought of Asia. I spotted this massive tree at the kaja (north) or sacred end of the long village of Penestanan, where it stands just kaja of the temple itself, and at the confluence of a river valley. Very probably this tree and the river create the sacred geography that establishes the site as the auspicious place for the architecture.
