We don't have much on classic or medieval history. It seems that in the beginning it was a marsh. Lots of mosquitos make the place hostile for human settlement. There were two small rivers and, further west, the lagoon that still exists but it wents much more inside the mainland than today. There is also this geological crack that allows the hot sulphurous water rise from the depths of the Earth. And that's why it all began...
