Back in time for Blue Crabs baseball in Waldorf. One of the most kid friendly parks, featuring a paddle boat pool, rock climbing tower, bounce houses, full size playgrounds, covered picnic seating atop the mini Green Monster, a huge outfield lawn, and even a basketball court. Food selections are creative, ranging from chicken and waffles to brisket, and, of course, crab cake sliders. Ten bucks will get you a seat on the front row behind the dugout. It's possible for a place to be simultaneously amazing and awful. Case in point: Stade Olympique. Because it wasn't designed specifically for baseball, the former home of the Expos has some unique quirks that make it an excellent place to see a single game, and some fundamental flaws that make it impossible to imagine returning to it several times a year. Baseball in a dome is sacrilegious to some, but in the park's defense, the roof was originally designed to be retractable. Engineering complications meant the playing surface would only see the light of day a handful of times. With the lid permanently closed, the place is CAVERNOUS. The outfield seats in the upper deck couldn't be reached by a baseball if it were launched by SpaceX. Not sure you'd even feel like you were watching a baseball game from up there. However, one benefit from the enclosed field is the sound of the crowd is epic. Adding to the cacophony, the blue seats in the lower bowl are mounted on aluminum stands. All...

My band of explorers ascended a mountain top in search of enlightenment as we traversed a vast, frigid land of enchantment in the Far East (of Pennsylvania). Yes, there's a nearly 100-foot-tall Pagoda atop Mount Penn in Reading. It was built in the early 1900s by a guy named William Witman, who planned for it to be the centerpiece of a resort. But his request for a liquor license was denied, so he sold the Pagoda to the city for a dollar. It's supposedly the only Pagoda in the world with a fireplace and chimney. The bell at the top was cast in Japan in 1739, shipped in 1905 via the Suez Canal and arrived in 1906. Legend has it the Pagoda's design was inspired by the Shogun's Nagoya Castle in Japan. That or the Japanese teahouse in Dreamland at Coney Island ... Either way, the kids thought it was really cool! #pagoda #PA #roadtrip

Today could've been a complete dud, pun intended. I drove them an hour past tonight's hockey venue to go see a pile of rocks. But these aren't just any rocks. They are the only rocks like them on the planet. When you hit them with a hammer they sound like a bell, or a least metallic (flip to the video if you want to hear them). According to the Oracle (Google) scientists can't figure out why they sound that way or how they all ended up here. The kids had so much fun climbing across the massive pile to hear the different sounds each rock made. The frozen waterfall was an unexpected bonus. Solid dad win that was worth the extra couple hours in the car and getting out in the temps in the teens! #ringingrocks #roadtrip

I grew up watching Ft. Worth Fire CHL minor league hockey in the Tarrant County Convention Center Arena, which was a classic 60's styled, concrete, civic center type building that happened to look like a flying saucer. My nostalgia for that place causes me to love odd little arenas like Royal Farms in Baltimore and the Tacomadome in Washington. The PPL Center in Allentown is as far as you can get from a 60s era civic center ... Felt more like an NHL game than an AHL matchup that cost 11 bucks to get into. And I gotta admit, it was excellent. Old school, midsized arenas with questionable seating arrangements and design oddities definitely hold a soft spot in my heart, but if this is the future of minor league hockey, the future is bright. #hockey #roadtrip #ahl

Holiday adventure is underway! Cody challenged me to figure out a hockey road trip, which is much more difficult than baseball considering they don't play 5 days a week. But five consecutive nights of games in Pennsylvania and New York lined up perfectly. First stop is best known for being an excellent minor league baseball town, Reading, PA. Turns out it's a solid hockey town, too. Taking a page out of the Reading Phillies playbook, they allow local restaurants in, not just the mega company contracted for concessions. Had a great pulled pork sandwich with black pepper mac n chee, and Cody has a giant burrito. Our favorite go-to snack is the giant pretzel and this place made some of the best we've had. Good start! #hockey #roadtrip
