We have paid a Visitax to enter Mexico by air and another £80 to enter from Belize by sea plus an exit fee of about £16 to leave from Belize.
Once clear we jump a cab to the lagoon side town of Bacalar.
A Mexican Pueblo Magico it’s a quiet little town by an amazing inland freshwater lagoon famous for it’s incredible seven different colour.
We hav beautiful little hotel with lakeside views called the Sun Ha.
There’s an impressive fort and a very large Central Square but it seems very quiet and pretty much closed up by 10 pm.

It’s a pretty seamless though long 10 hour journey out to the islands.
Didn’t see much of Belize City but it looked pretty dilapidated and apparently very dangerous in parts..
First impression of San Pedro is not good.
Three enormous buildings are going up right by the ferry dock and the place looks like a huge building site.
Petrol powered Golf carts are rented by virtually everyone and there are thousands of them.
We drive past swanky hotels and ramshackle restaurants to our Airbnb towards the north of the island where it is much quieter.
There is an environmental disaster here and along the Caribbean coast. The beaches are absolutely inundated with fowl smelling sargassum seaweed. A dirty brown mess that has ruined any chance of swimming on the windward side of the island.
Ambergris is a strange place. In parts it’s trying to be a mini Cancun, other parts high end beach villas and a clogged and dilapidated Main Street.
Without a golf cart it would be hopeless but whizzing around the island on one is great fun.
Two great dives on the outer reef one of which in the company of three nurse sharks which followed us all the way sometimes only a foot or two away.
We took a ferry for the day over to the neighbouring island of Caye Caulker.
Totally different to Ambergris Caye. No cars, just bikes and golf buggies. Sand streets and low key bars and hotels. It’s a Sunday so it’s pretty busy and there’s a bit of party scene which looks like it quietens down after the day trippers have gone.
Leaving Belize for Mexico by fast ferry and heading to Bacalar in Quintana Roo on Yucatan Peninsula.

The standard bus is not too bad for a 5 hour journey though it’s pretty tight.
Flores is a stunning little town connected to the mainland by a causeway.
The town is dominated by a gleaming white twin towered church which sits high on a hill with the densely packed town dropping away to the foreshore.
There used to be a promenade that encircled the island and would have been a fabulous walk has now been completed flooded due to rising water levels in the lake. Incredibly the water has risen nearly 2 meters over the last ten to fifteen years. All that remains are a few forlorn lamppost and a submerged river wall.
The hotels and restaurants that once must have had a fabulous lake frontage are now only accessible from the busy road.
We are staying at the Hotel Santana ,right on the lakefront ,which sits a few meters above the flooded Malecon.
Still, it’s a lovely place to be for a few days and one of the highlights of Guatamala.

We arrive at the coastal town of Livingston, only accessible by boat at the the end of a peninsula jutting out into the Caribbean.
The foreshore is very run down and dirty and mostly abandoned enterprises that once ran along the coast. One hurricane too many perhaps.
The town is a mix of black Caribs and Hispanics .
The town is ramshackle and dilapidated but not without a certain tropical charm.

A glorious colonial city and former capital surrounded by enormous volcanoes.

There are fabulous churches and magnificent buildings, leafy squares and cobblestone streets.
