Rome, Italy

After a long and exhausting combination of ferry and train, I made it to Rome. I never tire of exploring its amazing layers of history and gorgeous sights. I only had a couple days, so I hit the highlights and got some great shots of the Coliseum, Forum and Vatican. My last night I headed over to the Trevi Fountain to perform the cliché ritual of throwing a coin into it to make sure I'd be back in Rome someday.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

It was a long bus ride to Dubrovnik from Split, but I met some other solo travelers on it and was able to pass the time telling tales of our travels. I had Jauntlet on my phone so was able to show them my trip so far and future plans. After arriving in Dubrovnik, we all went for a walk on the walls for amazing views and had drinks at a bar on the cliffs outside the walls. I also enjoyed exploring Dubrovnik on my own, finding little seafood places on back streets and exploring the old fort and beach across the bay.

Split, Croatia

A quick hydrofoil ride across the Adriatic took me to Split, a lively and beautiful place full of travelers having fun among ancient Roman ruins and a massive modern port. The most impressive sight was Diocletian's Palace, which one time had been a massive palace for the Roman emperor, but over time had become the heart of the old town, bisected by narrow streets and a jumble of buildings built on top each other. The nearby rocky beach wasn't very inviting, so I spent the afternoon sipping cocktails on the Riva, a broad street along the waterfront lined with cafes. The next evening, there was a dance in the middle of the palace, where, surrounded by Roman columns, I met two Aussies who took me to a small club with an amazing DJ that I will never be able to find again.

Ancona

I landed in Florence and hopped a train to Ancona where I was to catch the ferry to Croatia. Exhausted, I stumbled into a hotel near the station. I wasn't expecting much since I was only staying there to catch the early morning boat, but after a little nap I went out to explore and was happily surprised by the beautiful old town and cathedral on a hill overlooking the port. I discovered a 16th century fountain of 13 masks representing people who had been beheaded. Being a port town, it was full of travelers coming and going and set a nice atmosphere for starting my trip.
