We thought that we would go over the Sonora Pass for variety (not far from Yosemite) and the fact it was closer than going back to Tahoe. Well, we got word that there was a big fire in the area which might have meant closed roads...or worse so we went back the way we came (one good thing...we had to go through a bit of Nevada and the gas prices were much cheaper!). Just outside of Tahoe we saw at least 11 fire trucks go back in the direction from which we had just come so I'm guessing we chose correctly. Unfortunately, we traded the fires for unbelievable traffic. It was the middle of the day on a Thursday and the traffic was ridiculous! We left at 10 and got home at 4. It should have only taken about 4-41/2 hrs. After that I spent at least another 4 hours just cleaning the trailer and doing laundry. I finally ate dinner at about 8:30! As always, the effort is always worth it. I love our trips and this was no exception. The location, people and all the rest was well worth the drive! Tomorrow we head home. We didn’t do too much today. Since we were going to be in the car most of the day tomorrow, I opted not to drive around exploring today. I did, however, get in another kayak on the reservoir with yet another person who is not only new to the group, but their airstream is their first trailer. It was a beautiful day and we had a great time. Steve, however, didn’t fair as well. While I was kayaking, he decided to go into town and visit the local butcher. He got there and they were closed so he googled another meat shop that sent him to Mammoth…about an hour away. He got all the way there and it turns out it was an ordinary Von’s…not unlike Safeway. Plus, there was heavy construction on the road so the traffic was horrible. All was good until he took the dogs out for a walk…when he came back it was dark and he ran into the picnic table and fell on gravel. It looked pretty awful and pretty painful. At least it wasn’t me getting injured this time! I took the kayak out on the water! It was a bit chilly (morning temperature being 33 degrees), but an otherwise beautiful day. The wind was all but gone so the water was like glass. After that we went to Buckeye Hot Springs. Not overly thrilled…slimy, smelly and muddy. Moving on we went on to visit Twin Lakes. Beautiful water! First thing to be done back at camp is to take a shower to get that “stank” off of me and out of my clothes. Tomorrow is our last day here. Not the best way to start your day! The wind had not let up so we decided to do some exploring which took us to Yerrington, Nevada. Not much to report but the vastness and the beautiful scenery never fail to impress. I decided when we got back that I would be positive about the wind dying down tonight and get the kayak ready for tomorrow. It’s supposed to be cold, but if there’s no wind, I’ll take it. We went from the coast, north to Tahoe, through a bit of Nevada and finally ended up in the Eastern Sierras. Turns out it was even longer than I thought it would be. We got up at 6:30, fed and walked the dogs, brushed our teeth, packed up the trailer and were on our way at 7:40. We made a quick stop at Starbucks and officially started on our way at 8:00. It started out with heavy fog, but since we were stuck in the car, we didn’t care. We chose what we THOUGHT was going to be a straighter, easier route but it proved to be the opposite. Luckily neither one of us gets carsick! When we finally made it to the freeway that would start us on our journey to Bridgeport, we THOUGHT we would have no traffic issues since Friday is usually the big getaway day and today was Saturday. Wrong again! After 9 hours we finally made it to our destination. It was our very good fortune to be meeting up with our very good friend who knew the drive we would have and offered to have dinner waiting for us when we arrived. What a gift! After our delicious dinner we got treated to a spectacular sunset and are tucked in our bed. Despite the gloomy weather it was a great day all around. It started with me finally getting my Amazon package…even the one sent to the wrong address! After worrying they might have to be left behind because of registration offices closing early, they both showed up. With one the timing was perfect…the only place in the campground where wi-fi and cell worked was at the showers. I had just walked up to take a shower and my phone rang! After that we had a lovely lunch in town and checked out where we would go to catch the skunk train later in the day…yes, the skunk train. Kind of a bucket list activity for me. We took the train to a beautiful venue in the redwoods where there was a bar with live music. It was beautiful…so much so we decided to stay and do a hike with the dogs while we were there. Of course this was not without its snafu. Steve very nicely had dropped me at the trail head and he went to park the car. When he came back with the dogs we took off only to have me realize that I had left my backpack at the trail head! Definitely added to my steps for the day! Luckily we were on a fire road which was mostly shade because for the first time in a long time it was actually sunny and warm. Tomorrow will be spent local getting things packed up for an early morning departure to Bridgeport on Saturday. Loooong day in the car…I’m guessing 8 hours! Tomorrow night we’re taking the skunk train to a bar in the woods for beer and live music. We got up and took off for the Mendocino Botanical Gardens. We’d been there before, but it is so beautiful that you just can’t get enough of the incredible array of plants and scenery. After that we had lunch at a restaurant by the water. From there it was off to Glass Beach. Hard to believe it got its name because it was used for a time (because of someone’s temporary insanity I can only surmise) as a dump. Having all of the broken glass on the beach with the tides and waves tossing them about rounded off the jagged edges and turned the beach into a colorful blanket. As you can see, a dump it is not! From there we headed back to camp where I discovered I didn’t have my reading glasses. Somehow they were left behind at the restaurant so a quick trip back was in order. Steve needed to get a cable for his insulin pump so he offered to go back. He was directed to the local Radio Shack (didn’t even know there were any left) where he got a cable, but the clerk sold him the wrong one. He went back to exchange it and they refused. This was all within 30 minutes. Unfortunately, he paid cash and there was no recourse. So off to cvs he went where they were very helpful and he has the correct cable. We set our “wheels up” departure for 10:00 am and left at 10:11…not bad! Our destination was Pomo Campground. We had stayed here before and knew the campground was lovely and the location couldn’t be better for activities. The only thing that’s been a bit of a snafu is that I heard that mosquitoes were bad in Bridgeport and ordered repellant refills to be sent to me at the campground. Only trouble is that the address on their website is wrong. They couldn’t cancel the order so we went to the address it’s going to to ask them to call me when it arrives…except the woman who runs the campground it’s going to doesn’t work on Thursdays…the day it is set to arrive! So, it’s anybody’s guess on how this will turn out! I ordered a second set to be sent to where we are so we’ll just have to wait for Friday to see if that comes!
